Montenegro

Montenegro is a land of breathtaking contrasts, where rugged mountains plunge into turquoise seas and charming medieval towns perch on rocky shores. Its coastline along the Adriatic is dotted with hidden bays, historic villages, and vibrant seaside resorts, while inland, national parks reveal dramatic canyons, serene lakes, and dense forests. Towns like Kotor and Budva offer a mix of history, culture, and lively streets, perfect for wandering and discovering. For travelers seeking both adventure and beauty, Montenegro delivers an unforgettable experience, where every mountain path, coastal road, and ancient alley feels like a new discovery waiting to be savored.

Why you should visit Montenegro

You should visit Montenegro because it packs an extraordinary variety of landscapes into one of the smallest countries in Europe. Imagine sailing through the stunning Bay of Kotor, walking the ancient walls of a medieval old town, swimming in the Adriatic on a warm summer afternoon, and then driving just an hour inland to find yourself surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks and glacial lakes.

Beyond its scenery, Montenegro also carries a rich history and culture that reveals itself in its fortified coastal towns, orthodox monasteries perched on cliffsides, and the relaxed Mediterranean way of life that makes every day feel unhurried.

Add to that the fact that Montenegro is still relatively undiscovered compared to its neighbours, meaning you get all the beauty without the overwhelming crowds, and at prices that make the whole experience even more enjoyable.

For us, Montenegro is not just a destination, it is the kind of place that makes you stop, look around, and wonder how more people have not found it yet.

Our experiences

Exploring Montenegro on a road trip was one of the most beautiful journeys we have done. The country surprised us at every turn with its incredible variety, from the dramatic landscapes of Durmitor National Park, which we honestly consider one of the most impressive nature parks in Europe, to the scenic drive through Nikšić and the unforgettable visit to Ostrog Monastery carved into the mountainside. The coastline around Kotor Bay was another highlight, with breathtaking viewpoints over the fjord-like waters and a charming old town hidden within ancient walls. Even Podgorica, which we expected the least from, had its own small surprises and character. Montenegro felt compact, diverse and full of moments that stayed with us long after the trip.

Practical tips

  • Best Time : Late spring to early autumn for best weather and roads

  • Transport : Rental car highly recommended

  • Driving : Mountain roads, narrow but incredibly scenic

  • Costs : Affordable compared to most of Europe

  • Weather : Hot summers on the coast, cooler in the mountains

  • Daylight : Long summer days, perfect for road trips

  • Fuel : Readily available, but plan in remote areas
